About Chris Tribe Furniture

My career in furniture making started in 1990, with the intention of producing Shaker furniture to the same exacting standards as the originals. However business pressures lead me to other furniture styles, a fortuitous development really as I now enjoy a greater freedom of expression in my work. My style has developed from the minimalist forms of the Shakers to incorporate varied surface decoration and curved forms, now I can see Art Deco and Arts and Crafts influences there. However I still strive for the highest standards in design and making.

I earn my bread and butter through bespoke commissioned work, the challenge here is to marry my design vocabulary with the clients' requirements, a satisfying process for me and, I hope, the client. Every year I like to make a number of speculative pieces. Speculative work allows the development of new design ideas and experimentation with new techniques. My range of work is extensive from whole room layouts involving large fitted wardrobes and cupboards to delicate jewellery boxes.

I have taught furniture making at various colleges in south and west Yorkshire. I now offer courses in aspects of furniture making from my workshop in Blubberhouses.

I hope this site communicates the enjoyment I derive from my work and that you, in turn, enjoy seeing the products of my labours.
