Burr oak cabinet, oak bedroom suite and contemporary style kitchen

Followers of this blog will know a bit about the Wave kitchen which took up a good deal of my time in the latter half of 2010. It was fitted in November/December last year. We were quite pleased with the result and the customer was very pleased. Last week the photographer spent a day photographing it, I think he has captured it well. I hope the images make clear some of the features I have mentioned in my previous blogs. I think it shows the unity created by the matching and continuity of the grain on the doors and the impact of the wave and floor motif on the whole room. Full details of this kitchen can be found on the Designer Makers web site

The minimalist bedroom suite in oak and walnut originated in a set of CD drawers made for a customer about four years ago. I liked the design and when I was asked to make them again for another customer I made an additional set to exhibit as a bedside cabinet. At an exhibition someone ordered a pair and also wanted other pieces made for their spare bedroom. So I designed and made a bed head, wardrobe, chest of drawers and dressing mirror, in fact a full suite for the room. This minimalist look is a bit of a departure for me design wise, although there is still an interest in grain continuity which is one of my themes. I like the way the walnut details break up the oak grain. The pieces are veneered, but a thick 1.4mm veneer is used as opposed to the usual 0.6mm. This allows rounding of the corners without the danger of exposing the substrate, it also means less danger of denting though the veneer accidentally. Further information on this suite can be found here.

My latest piece is the cherry and burr oak cabinet with over shelf. This was made for a customer who lives round the corner from my previous workshop in Scissett. The specification for this piece was that it should have plenty of space for storing the various bits and pieces one collects in the lounge but also have an open shelf above for displaying photographs and ornaments. It took many iterations to arrive at this design. I particularly like the finger pulls on the doors, the cherry/burr oak sandwich on the arched supports, and the warm colour of the burr oak cherry combination. You can find more details on this piece here.

  • There is a walnut worktop on the sink/hob area. The customer requested that the wave not extend round to this area. I would have preferred it to run right round the room.
