Northern Contemporary Furniture Makers

About five years ago a small group of furniture designer makers based in the north got together to mount a fringe exhibition at Holmfirth Art week, we didn’t make a sale! Undaunted we went on to form the Northern Contemporary Furniture Makers with the intention of raising public awareness of designer maker furniture in the region.
Although the main aim was to provide sales opportunities via exhibitions I think one of the successes of the NCFM has been the networking that it has stimulated, the Designer Makers Gallery came about partly through this networking. The NCFM now has 20 exhibiting members and many associate members, a web site and a regular annual exhibition in Leyburn N. Yorks.
Earlier the we had our first Gathering giving members an opportunity to get to know each other better and hear from speakers about aspects of the business. It was gratifying to also see a large number of students at the Gathering, fine furniture makers of the future. The Gathering seems to have acted as a stimulus for the membership to think about the future of the group. There is a real feeling within the group that we should push on and be more positive with our PR and marketing. There are a lot of exciting ideas being thrown in, the trick is to convert those ideas into action within a voluntary organisation.
If we do succeed in harnessing some of these ideas you should be hearing a lot more about the NCFM in future.
