Serious outbreak of curved stool in North Yokshire
Friday, 6th August 2010 22:16 PM
This week there were a number of serious cases of curved stool reported in Blubberhouses North Yorkshire. Investigating the outbreak Professor Willie Eckerslike of the Liverpool School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine said "At first we were seriously concerned about the outbreak. The symptoms being evidence of jigs, formers and bendy ply. However we eventually tracked down the source to Chris Tribe's workshop where he was running a veneering and laminating course. When we arrived a couple of the participants were looking seriously haggard, having spent five days working on the construction of their curved stools in cherry and poplar burr. However they all said it was well worth the risk, pronouncing themselves well pleased with their stools"
Chris Tribe is said to be unrepentant about his responsibility for the outbreak, saying "My aim is to pass on some of the skills I have learned over the past 30 years. I have produced curved stools for a number of years now. I decided they are an excellent exercise for passing on my veneering and laminating knowledge. The five days of the course are demanding, requiring concentration and stamina, but I know the participants enjoy the challenge" He added "Those wishing to avoid the risk of curved stool may wish to try my Beginners Five Day Course, however there is the serious danger of tapered leg on this course. Full details of my courses can be found at the relevant page on my web site".

Hi dad! Hendrik enjoys reading your blog and especially liked the one about your Heinrich incident... his dad is called Heinrich! We were reading this one and Hendrik wanted to know how you get the wood to be curved? I said i thought you had to bend it over a long period of time but I don't actually know... so we wondered how you do it?
Really like reading your blogs!x

Hi Heather
Glad to know you and Hendrick enjoy the blog. Does Hendrick lnow that the saw is called Heinrich beause it's a Felder, made in Austria.
The curves are formed using a number of layers of ply. There is a form of ply wood known as bendy ply which is very flexible. I use a 5mm thick version. On the outside are layers of 1.5 mm birch ply. So the stool had four layers of 5mm bendy ply then a layer of 1.5 mm ply on both sides then veneer over that. These layer are then bent over a former ,the glue I use takes about an hour to set. The layers are either bent over the former using a vacuum press or are clamped in male and female formers. I'll post some pictures on the original blog.
