Minimalist drawers
This piece started out with a commission for some CD drawers. I designed a set to complement the chunky oak coffee table also in the room. I liked the design and thought it would make a fine bedside cabinet. The original had walnut detail, I thought the red would provide that little something special and also bring out the colour of the oak.
The oak is a thick 1.4mm veneer on a man made substrate, this is more robust than the standard 0.6mm veneer and also allows a good rounding of the corners without exposing the substrate below. The matt red is painted onto solid poplar. The drawers feature carefully cut dovetails.
This design was later developed into a full bedroom scheme as shown here. For the faint hearted I can make this piece in other timbers or without the red detail!
