Domino chair

This hall chair was designed by committee! David Wilson, with whom I share a workshop and I both submitted designs to the customer who chose elements from both designs and added touches of her own. You could say that is the essence of bespoke!

The main challenge in the making was the shaping and fitting of the oval buttons on the back, requiring some careful and very accurate work. The back slats are fumed oak. Oak is fumed by exposing it to ammonia gas, the fuming time determines the final colour, these slatswere fumed for about eighteen hours toproduce a rich brown colour. The colour from fuming goes deep into the wood, unlike staining which is just surface colour.

The seat is in book matched oak burr. The tops of the back slats are supported by oval buttons in burr oak.

Although the back is very upright the back slats have some spring in them which gives added comfort. The general shape and the fumed oak slats give the chair a certain ecclesiastical look.
