Mackintoshy Dining Suite

Cost: Please contact for price

The commissioning specification for these pieces was that they were to be "chunky", to be in proportion with the large room in which they were to live. I am a bit wary of the chunky concept but I think it works in this case.

Constructed in solid oak, the top being approx. 70mm thick and the legs 150mm square this table is very heavy and was a nightmare to deliver!

The design, with its wedged tenons and eye like chair backs, is reminiscent of Mackintosh without being Mockingtosh.

Due to a tight schedule the making of the chairs was contracted out to Woodb in leeds

Carvers are to follow later in the year.

Other work in this commission can be seen in interiors.

  • The leg position means that they do not interfere with sitters leg room.
  • The four leg tenons pierce the table top and are wedged with rosewood wedges
  • The top is fitted with bread board ends, cross cleats tenoned and pegged to prevent warping
  • I was sceptical when the client asked for solid seats, and argued for upholstered drop in seats. However the chairs are surprisingly comfortable.
  • Rosewood wedges are also used on the chair tenons
  • The chair backs have a Mackintosh look to them
