Dean's Chess Table

Cost: Not for Sale

After completing exercises in the basics of furniture making a table is usually the first project for students on my furniture making courses. The brief is that the piece must involve mortice and tenons, some curves and some veneer and inlay. The rest is up to the students imagination.

Dean decided to make a chess table with a reversible inset board. The legs and frame are European oak, top is burr elm veneer; turning over the inset board reveals the walnut and elm chess board. The shaping of the tops of the legs into the table top is very crisply done, while the subtle curve of the legs shows a James Krenov influence.

As a first piece, this is a very well made elegant piece of furniture.

  • An elegant table with a reversible chess board
  • The back of the chess board matches the burr of the rest of the table
  • The chess squares are walnut and straight grain elm
  • The chess board is pressed on one edge to tilt up for removal
  • The fitting of the leg through the top is crisply done
